Cheap parts, simple to service. Typical book time 0.8 hr/axle.
$140 to $230
pads + rotors $270 to $450
Same story as Civic. Long-life ceramic gives best value.
$170 to $280
pads + rotors $320 to $540
Standard service. Hybrid version can extend pad life 30 to 50%.
$170 to $290
pads + rotors $320 to $540
Standard service. Look for OE-quality aftermarket from Akebono.
$200 to $320
pads + rotors $360 to $600
Larger rotors than the Camry. Hybrid models last longer between pads.
$200 to $320
pads + rotors $370 to $610
Standard service. Common DIY platform.
$220 to $360
pads + rotors $400 to $660
Heavier; expect shorter pad life if you tow.
$240 to $380
pads + rotors $440 to $720
Tow Package adds heavy-duty pads that cost 15 to 25% more.
$240 to $390
pads + rotors $450 to $740
Big rotors, big pads. Semi-metallic if you tow regularly.
$230 to $380
pads + rotors $430 to $710
Similar to F-150. Plenty of aftermarket pad choices.
$340 to $580
pads + rotors $620 to $1,080
Wear sensor replaces with each pad change. Reset required.
$360 to $600
pads + rotors $650 to $1,150
OEM rotors are pricey. Aftermarket Brembo or Zimmermann saves 30 to 50%.
$340 to $580
pads + rotors $620 to $1,100
Electronic parking brake requires scan tool to retract piston.
$200 to $360
pads + rotors $420 to $720
May not need replacement until 100,000+ miles thanks to regen.
$220 to $380
pads + rotors $450 to $760
Slightly heavier than Model 3 but pad life is similar.
Section 03
Three forces stack on top of each other and the bill compounds.
OEM parts markup
Dealer pads cost 2 to 3x aftermarket. The parts perform identically.
Higher labour rate
Dealer techs are billed at $150 to $250/hr versus $80 to $150/hr at independents.
Wear sensors and EPB
Brake-wear sensors and electronic parking brakes need scan tools and reset procedures.
Section 04
OEM pads are roughly 2 to 3x the price of aftermarket equivalents. Dealer labour rates are 30 to 50% higher. Many luxury cars use brake-wear sensors that need replacing each pad change. And dealers often bundle rotors. A $250 Civic job can be a $700 BMW job for the same labour time.
The pads themselves cost about the same as a comparable ICE car. The savings come from frequency: regen braking handles 70 to 80% of slowing, so pads can last 100,000+ miles. You'll likely have one or two pad changes over the life of the car versus three or four on an equivalent ICE vehicle.
Yes, especially if you tow. Trucks come from the factory with semi-metallic or heavy-duty compounds that handle the extra weight and heat. Putting passenger-car ceramic pads on an F-150 you tow with is asking for fade and short pad life.
