File 04-A / Per axle

Brake Pad Cost Per Axle

Brakes are priced by the axle, not the wheel. This file explains why the axle is the unit of pricing, what one axle costs across pad types and vehicle classes, and how the front and rear differ.

Quick answer

Pads only: $120 to $300 per axle (rear low, front high). Pads + rotors: $240 to $600 per axle. Both axles of pads: $300 to $550. All four corners with rotors: $600 to $1,100.

Section 01

Why brakes are priced per axle

When a shop quotes 'per axle' they mean both wheels on one end of the car, front or rear. Pads are always replaced in pairs on the same axle, so the axle, not the individual wheel, is the unit of pricing.

One axle = two wheels

An axle is the left and right wheel across from each other. One axle of pads means both sides done together.

Never one wheel alone

Mismatched pad thickness on the same axle causes pulling and uneven braking. Both sides are replaced together, every time.

Front and rear are separate

Fronts wear 1.5 to 2x faster than rears, so you usually pay for one axle at a time, not all four.

Cost per axle, in one table

Independent shop figures on the left, dealer pricing on the right. All rows are per axle unless they say 'both axles' or 'all four'. Ceramic pads, parts and labour included.

ServiceIndependent shopDealership
Front axle, pads only$150 to $300$220 to $400
Rear axle, pads only$120 to $250$180 to $340
Front axle, pads + rotors$300 to $600$420 to $850
Rear axle, pads + rotors$240 to $500$340 to $700
Both axles, pads only$300 to $550$420 to $740
All four corners, pads + rotors$600 to $1,100$900 to $1,800

Section 03

Per-axle parts cost by pad compound

The pad compound sets the parts cost per axle. Add labour ($80 to $150 per axle at an independent) for the full per-axle figure.

Organic (NAO)

$20 to $50 parts

Cheapest pad, wears fastest. Parts only; add labour for the per-axle total.

Semi-metallic

$25 to $60 parts

Best for towing and heat. Mid-price compound per axle.

Ceramic

$30 to $80 parts

Longest life, cleanest, quietest. Most common per-axle choice.

Section 04

Per-axle cost by vehicle class

Pads only, per axle, independent shop, ceramic. Heavier and pricier vehicles carry larger parts. See the by-vehicle file for fifteen named models.

Vehicle classPads only / axle
Economy / compact$140 to $260
Midsize sedan$170 to $290
SUV / crossover$200 to $340
Pickup truck$220 to $370
Luxury / European$320 to $560

Common questions

How much do brake pads cost per axle?

Pads only: $120 to $300 per axle at an independent shop, depending on vehicle and pad compound. Rear axles sit at the low end ($120 to $250), front axles higher ($150 to $300). Add rotors and a single axle runs $240 to $600. Dealer pricing adds roughly 30 to 50% on top.

What does 'per axle' mean for brakes?

An axle is the pair of wheels across from each other, front or rear. Brake pads are always replaced in pairs on the same axle, so shops quote and price the job per axle (two wheels) rather than per individual wheel. One axle of pads means both the left and right pads on that end of the car.

Is brake pad cost quoted per axle or per wheel?

Per axle. You cannot safely replace the pad on one wheel and leave the other, because mismatched pad thickness on the same axle causes pulling and uneven braking. So the standard unit of pricing is the axle: one set of pads, both wheels, one labour charge.

How much to replace brake pads on all four wheels?

All four corners (both axles) of pads only runs $300 to $550 at an independent shop with ceramic pads. With rotors on both axles, expect $600 to $1,100. You rarely need all four at once though, because front pads wear 1.5 to 2x faster than rear.

Why is the front axle more expensive than the rear?

The front axle handles 60 to 70% of braking force, so manufacturers fit larger pads and rotors there. Bigger parts plus the heat they manage make a front axle cost roughly 15 to 25% more than the rear for the same vehicle.
